What Exactly Is High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Poly Furniture?

What is DuraWeather® POLY Wood And How Is It Made?

Poly lumber is created from 100% recyclable milk jugs and premium high density plastics. It is collected and sorted, refined into pellets, melted, combined with all-weather additives to protect against fading and color dyes, and extruded (not injected!) into lumber boards.

Is All Poly-wood The Same?

Simply put, NO. There are various types of poly lumber and all have different grades. Similar to how aluminum has different grades, with each specializing or performing better in different factors such as strength, fading, and corrosion. There are various types of "Poly". Manufacturers who use a lower grade of Poly will often mix wood particles with the plastic in the melting process in order to create poly-lumber cheaper which sacrifices the quality and longevity of end made furniture. The way in which HDPE Poly is manufactured is equally a very important factor. Some manufacturers create poly lumber through injection, rather than extrusion. When poly lumber is injected air pockets are commonly found inside the lumber itself which increases the risk of breakage as well as makes the furniture lighter and less wind resilient. Poly lumber that is extruded has a much higher strength to density ratio and better wind resilience. DuraWeather® Poly Furniture is extruded, not injected.

Why Choose Premium Poly Furniture?

Due to its outstanding performance in outdoor application against fading, cracking, warping, rotting, as well as its heavy and sturdy nature against strong winds, demand for poly furniture throughout recent years has increased dramatically. In addition to its outstanding durability, it is not a matter of debate that our planet is experiencing drastic negative impacts from CO2 emissions. Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. It is of upmost importance that we monitor trees and their regrowth. By manufacturing quality outdoor furniture from recycled plastic we are saving our trees and wildlife to improve sustainability.

Approximately 210,000,000 (if you can fathom this amount) are recovered annually and given life as 100% post-consumed recycled commercial grade high density polyethylene (HDPE).

What Is Sustainable Development?

Sustainable development is an organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services on which the economy and society depend. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resources are used to continue to meet human needs without undermining the integrity and stability of the natural system. Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Summary:

If you decide to purchase poly furniture choose your manufacturer wisely. First, ensure that it is a high quality grade of poly. Second, you should ensure that the poly that the supplier is using is 100% recycled plastic. Third, it is important that the poly is extruded and not injected. Lastly, let others know of the sustainability efforts that poly furniture is making in our environment! Let's all make sure we are doing our part to better our world before it is too late.
